Myrtle Beach officials are considering a rule change that would limit the capacity of future bars and nightclubs along Ocean Boulevard to 150 people.
Planning Commission Review
The city’s planning commission will discuss the proposed amendment at its regular meeting on Tuesday. If approved, the overlay zone would restrict new nightclubs, bars, and similar establishments from exceeding 150-person occupancy, while existing licensed venues would remain as non-conforming uses.
Public Hearings and City Council Approval
The planning board will review the text amendment, hold public hearings, and make recommendations to the city council. Any changes would need council approval before taking effect.
Safety Concerns
Mayor Mark Kruea emphasized that safety enhancements are a top priority. Ocean Boulevard has experienced several high-profile incidents over the past years, including a mass shooting in April 2025, prompting officials to evaluate public safety measures.
