Authorities in Cartagena, Colombia, arrested a 27-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man after they allegedly tried to smuggle three live monkeys in their underwear across borders, killing one in the process.

Incident Details

The attempt occurred at Rafael Núñez International Airport as the duo tried to bring the primates into the Dominican Republic. Two white-faced capuchins survived, but a howler monkey suffocated and died during the smuggling attempt.

Charges and Police Statement

The pair will face charges of illegal exploitation of natural resources and wildlife trafficking. Brigadier General Gelver Yecid Peña Araque described the act as “inhumane” and a “flagrant violation of animal rights,” noting the death of the howler monkey in cruel conditions.

Treatment of Surviving Monkeys

Authorities provided care for the surviving monkeys, feeding and giving medical attention. Images and footage show the capuchins resting, cuddling, and holding a stuffed animal while being cared for by officials.
