A new survey by the Regan Zambri Law group has named the I-77 Exit 5 to Tyvola Road in Charlotte as the second most stressful off ramp in North Carolina. The survey, which polled over 3,000 drivers, ranked the most anxiety-inducing ramps in the country based on the experiences of drivers rather than crash data.
Most Stressful Off Ramps in North Carolina
The survey highlighted the following four North Carolina ramps as the most stressful for drivers:
- I-40 Exit 289 to Wade Avenue, Raleigh
- I-77 Exit 5 to Tyvola Road, Charlotte
- I-85 Exit 126 to US-421, Greensboro
- I-26 Exit 50 to Hendersonville Road, Asheville
According to the report, the I-77 Exit 5 to Tyvola Road in Charlotte is particularly stressful due to heavy traffic, short ramps, and abrupt transitions from freeway speed to local streets. The report noted that traffic along this stretch often slows as drivers approach one of Charlotte’s busiest corridors, creating congestion as cars stack up. This issue worsens during peak travel times when vehicles line up for the intersection, leading to reduced speeds and increased stress for drivers.
I-77 in the News
The findings come amid ongoing discussions about changes to I-77 South, as the state plans to add toll lanes to an 11-mile stretch of the highway from uptown Charlotte to the South Carolina border. One of the project’s primary goals is to reduce congestion, but it has sparked concerns among local residents and the Charlotte City Council, which is considering requesting a pause on the project due to concerns about displacement and the potential impact on local parks and green spaces.
Additionally, a recent crash on I-77 near Exit 3 on May 8 led to significant traffic backups, further highlighting the ongoing challenges on this major roadway.
Community Feedback on I-77 Project
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is currently seeking community feedback on the I-77 South toll lane project, aiming to address concerns raised by residents about the potential effects on their communities.
