An American passenger returning from the MV Hondius, a luxury cruise ship recently struck by a hantavirus outbreak, has tested positive for the deadly Andes virus, while a second passenger is showing mild symptoms, health officials confirmed on Sunday. This follows the tragic death of three passengers and several others falling ill aboard the ship.
Repatriation Flight to Nebraska Medical Center
The two infected passengers, along with 17 other US passengers, will be flown back to the United States in biocontainment units. They will be transported to the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, located in Omaha.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed the repatriation details in a statement, ensuring that each passenger would receive appropriate care upon arrival.
Health Conditions and Testing
One of the passengers has tested “mildly PCR positive” for the Andes virus, while the second passenger is exhibiting mild symptoms, though it is unclear whether they have been tested for the virus yet.
The Andes virus, which is carried by rodents, has a severe impact on human health, with a high fatality rate. So far, it has claimed the lives of three passengers on the Hondius.
Isolation and Ongoing Care
Upon arrival in Nebraska, the passengers will undergo clinical assessments to determine their condition and the necessary treatment. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended a 42-day isolation period for all passengers who were on the vessel, due to the risk of transmission.
The Deadly Impact of Andes Virus
The Andes virus is part of the hantavirus family, which has a staggering mortality rate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nearly 38% of individuals who experience respiratory symptoms from the disease die. The virus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents, their droppings, or urine.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely as they provide care to the affected passengers.
