A science teacher at Alexander High School in Douglasville, Georgia, was arrested on Friday for allegedly sexually assaulting one of her students. The teacher, Maris Nichols, 25, is accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior with the student, including a purported sexual encounter inside a closet on school property. Nichols has been charged with two counts of sexual assault by a person in a supervisory position.
Alleged Assaults
Nichols, a biology teacher at the school, is accused of assaulting the same student on at least two separate occasions within a span of two weeks. The first alleged incident occurred on April 23 in a closet located between classrooms at Alexander High School.
The second reported assault is said to have taken place inside a Hummer parked in a residential driveway in Douglasville. Details about the vehicle’s ownership and the location of the house remain unclear.
Investigation and School Response
Upon learning of the allegations, the Douglas County School System initiated an immediate investigation. A statement from the district emphasized the importance of student safety and condemned the alleged actions as “unacceptable.” Nichols was placed on leave while the investigation was ongoing, although the district had not confirmed her identity at the time.
The district’s letter to parents confirmed that Nichols was the subject of the investigation. Her profile has since been removed from the school’s website.
Teacher’s Background
Nichols began her tenure at Alexander High School in April 2023 as the football operations manager. One month later, she transitioned into a biology teaching position, where she held both roles simultaneously. Nichols graduated from Liberty University, a private evangelical Christian school affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, with a Bachelor of Science degree in teaching.
The university is known for its strict fraternization policies, requiring students to abstain from sexual activity outside of a “biblically ordained marriage.”
Legal Consequences
Nichols has been charged with two counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority. She is currently being held in the Douglas County Jail with a bond set at $40,000.
The case continues to raise concerns about teacher-student relationships and the importance of ensuring a safe environment for students.
