A tragic incident occurred in Karnataka’s Bidar district on May 9, 2026, when a 5-month-old baby girl, Shivani, was fatally attacked by a stray dog that wandered into her family’s home. The attack has sparked outrage in the community, leading to demands for action to control the stray dog population in the area.
The Fatal Attack
Shivani, the daughter of Siddappa and Sudha, was reportedly sleeping in the hall while her mother was occupied with household chores. With the door left open, a stray dog managed to enter the home and attacked the infant.
According to local reports from Deccan Herald and The Hindu, when Shivani’s mother heard the screams, she rushed to the scene to find the dog attacking her daughter.
The mother recounted her efforts to drive the dog away but found that Shivani had already sustained severe injuries, including bites to her head, face, and other parts of her body.
Despite being rushed to the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) for immediate treatment, the infant succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. Senior pediatrician Shanthala Koujalgi confirmed Shivani’s death.
Stray Dog Issues in the Community
The attack has raised concerns about the growing problem of stray dogs in the area. Villagers had reportedly been complaining for some time about packs of stray dogs roaming the streets, yet the authorities had not taken sufficient action to address the issue. The attack on Shivani has led to calls for immediate measures to control the stray dog population and prevent future tragedies.
Government Response and Compensation
In the wake of the incident, Bidar district-in-charge Minister Eshwar B. Khandre expressed his condolences to the grieving family and assured them that the government would stand by them during their difficult time. He offered prayers for the peace of the departed child and strength for the grieving parents.
Minister Khandre also instructed the district administration to provide immediate compensation to the family and take necessary actions to identify and control the stray dog population in accordance with regulations. The residents, however, have expressed frustration, demanding more urgent action to tackle the growing problem of stray dogs in the area.
Community Outrage and Demands for Change
The community’s outrage continues to build as they call for stricter measures to address the safety concerns posed by stray dogs. The family and residents are now seeking justice and compensation for the loss of the young child, who had her whole life ahead of her.
