A man from Walterboro was detained on firearms charges following an accident

The North Charleston Police Department arrested a Walterboro man following a crash early Wednesday morning.

Arrest Details

David Leander Mitchell, 53, was involved in a crash around 12:30 a.m. at NAD Road and Highway 78. After officers approached the vehicle, they detected the smell of marijuana, which led to a probable cause search.

Discovery of Firearm

During the search, officers discovered a loaded 9-mm handgun with 12 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. Mitchell, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms due to his prior convictions.

Charges and Detention

Mitchell was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center following his arrest.
