A California man has been arrested after authorities said a 19-year-old nursing student was killed in a parking lot crash in Long Beach.

Driver Charged In Fatal Parking Lot Crash

According to the Long Beach Police Department, 40-year-old Desean Edwards is charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence in the death of Grace Edwards, who was not related to him.

Police said the incident happened on Nov. 2 at a shopping center on Bellflower Boulevard.

Teen Struck While Walking With Mother

Investigators said Grace Edwards was walking through the parking lot with her mother when she was hit by a vehicle backing out of a parking space.

Authorities said distracted driving is believed to have contributed to the crash.

Grace suffered serious upper-body injuries and later died at a hospital.

Family Remembers Nursing Student

Friends and family described Grace as a caring and dedicated nursing student who loved helping others.

According to a fundraiser created for her family, Grace had recently spoken about becoming an organ donor. Her organs were later donated, including her heart, which reportedly went to an 8-year-old child.

Suspect Arrested

Police arrested Desean Edwards on Tuesday. He was booked into jail on a $75,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 13.
