A man from Walterboro was detained on firearms charges following an accident

David Leander Mitchell, a 53-year-old man from Walterboro, South Carolina, was arrested early Wednesday morning following a crash in North Charleston. Mitchell, who is a convicted felon, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The Incident

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to a crash at NAD Road and Highway 78. Upon approaching Mitchell’s vehicle, officers reportedly smelled marijuana, which gave them probable cause to search the vehicle.

Discovery of Firearm

During the search, officers discovered a loaded 9-mm handgun with 12 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. As a convicted felon, Mitchell is prohibited from possessing firearms, leading to his arrest.

Mitchell was taken into custody and booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
