A 51-year-old man from Oklahoma, Clifton Wayne Hampton, has been sentenced to life in prison for the killing of his wife, Christina Hampton, whom he strangled to death after a heated argument about their marriage.
Rogers County District Judge Lara M. Russell sentenced Hampton to life with the possibility of parole, which in Oklahoma means he will serve a minimum of 45 years in prison, with the requirement to complete at least 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The Crime
On October 2, 2025, authorities were called to St. Francis Hospital in Vinita, Oklahoma, where they discovered Christina Hampton’s body. The victim, 38, had visible injuries, including bleeding from her nose and scrapes on her knees, as well as injuries consistent with strangulation. Initial statements from Clifton Hampton, her husband, appeared suspicious, and investigators quickly became suspicious of his account.
Hampton initially claimed his wife had left their vehicle during a drive and collapsed on the roadside, but his story was inconsistent and filled with contradictions. A short time later, Hampton admitted to killing his wife.
According to prosecutors, he confessed that the argument about divorce and his wife’s criticism of him had driven him to strangle her while she was lying in bed. He also admitted to attempting to move her body using a dolly and dragging her to his vehicle to transport her to the hospital, even though she was already dead.
Victim Impact
During the sentencing hearing, Shirley Vanderpool, Christina Hampton’s mother, read a victim impact statement. She expressed her profound grief, recalling how her daughter had been promised love and protection by Hampton but was ultimately killed just days before their 13th wedding anniversary.
Vanderpool also shared the heartbreak of her granddaughter, Layla Valenzuela, who had repeatedly asked, “Where’s mommy?” after her father returned without Christina.
Layla, who was 8 years old at the time, had her life shattered by the loss of her mother, and her statement in court underscored the lasting emotional toll of the crime.
Clifton Hampton’s Confession
After his arrest, Hampton revealed that the fatal argument had escalated when Christina called him “pathetic” and said that she and her friends had made fun of him. He admitted that his humiliation and anger led him to choke his wife while she lay in bed.
According to prosecutors, Hampton later described his actions as “taking things too far,” but his attempt to explain away the injuries to his wife’s body was marked by further contradictions.
Hampton’s chilling admission included details about trying to move Christina’s body and attributing her injuries to the struggle. He stated that his intention in choking her was to “shut her up.”
The Sentence
Judge Russell sentenced Hampton to life in prison for first-degree murder, emphasizing that the crime was premeditated and occurred in the context of domestic abuse. As a result of his guilty plea, Hampton will serve at least 38 years before being eligible for parole.
