Drivers in Johns Island can expect major traffic improvements as a new interchange on Highway 17 is set to open by the end of this year.
New Interchange Coming Soon
The project, led by Charleston County Public Works, is part of a larger three-mile road upgrade. The new interchange will include four ramps, allowing smoother movement between Johns Island and nearby areas like West Ashley.
Officials say this change will make a big difference compared to the current traffic situation, which is often slow and congested.
Improving Safety and Traffic Flow
Engineering officials explained that the new setup will allow vehicles to move more freely without long stops at busy intersections.
Right now, the intersection near Highway 17 and Main Road is known for heavy traffic and safety concerns. The new interchange aims to reduce long wait times and lower the risk of accidents by improving how vehicles enter and exit the roadway.
Faster Progress Than Expected
Parts of the project, including the interchange and a roundabout, are being completed earlier than planned. This will help drivers see some benefits even before the entire project is finished.
The design also allows construction to continue without heavily disrupting current traffic, which has been a major focus during the work.
What the Full Project Includes
The larger road improvement plan is one of the biggest in the county’s history, costing around $354 million.
Once completed, it will include:
- New bridges
- Pedestrian pathways
- Stormwater system upgrades
- A roundabout for smoother traffic movement
Completion Timeline
While the interchange will open soon, the full project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
