Man arrested after allegedly robbing a North Charleston store for tacos

Police in North Charleston have arrested a man accused of threatening restaurant workers with a knife over a dispute about food.

What Happened

According to authorities, Thomas Matthew Speissegger, 44, went to Taqueria El Manatial earlier in the day and later returned, claiming he did not receive the number of tacos he paid for.

Police say the situation quickly escalated when he became angry and confronted employees inside the restaurant.

Threat and Robbery

Investigators allege that Speissegger:

  • Pulled out a knife and threatened workers
  • Took the restaurant’s tip jar
  • Tried to flee the scene

However, restaurant employees acted quickly and managed to stop him before he could escape.

Suspect Detained

When officers arrived around 8:30 p.m., they found workers holding Speissegger down at the scene.

Police then took him into custody without further incident.

Charges Filed

Speissegger is now facing:

  • Armed robbery
  • Possession of a weapon during a violent crime

He has been booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
