The Town of Mount Pleasant is moving ahead with a plan to ease traffic congestion at one of its busiest intersections.
Project Targets Congested Intersection
Town officials are focusing on the intersection of Long Point Road and the I-526 East off-ramp, an area known for heavy traffic, especially during peak hours.
Local business owners say delays can be significant.
“You never know when you’re going to get through,” said Kate Sherman, manager of Summit Coffee, noting waits can stretch up to 20 minutes.
Planned Traffic Changes
The project includes removing one of the traffic signals at the intersection.
Officials say this will allow eastbound drivers heading onto I-526 to move freely without stopping, improving overall traffic flow.
With fewer signal phases, the remaining light will be adjusted to provide longer green times for drivers continuing along Long Point Road or making turns.
Heavy Truck Traffic a Factor
The intersection is frequently used by trucks traveling to and from the port, contributing to congestion.
Residents and business owners say the volume of large vehicles can quickly back up traffic, particularly near the off-ramp.
Pedestrian Safety Improvements
In addition to traffic changes, the town plans to relocate a crosswalk to improve safety.
The current crosswalk from the I-526 eastbound off-ramp across Long Point Road will be moved to Wando Park Boulevard.
Officials say the relocation will provide a safer and more practical crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction Timeline
The town has already selected a contractor for the project.
Construction is expected to begin within the next month as officials work to reduce delays and improve safety in the area.
