A South Carolina man has pleaded guilty in connection with a deadly shooting that claimed two lives during a 2021 birthday party in the Lowcountry.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Dionte Mitchell, 26, of Seabrook, pleaded guilty Wednesday to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
Circuit Court Judge Michael Nettles sentenced Mitchell to 25 years in prison. Under state law, he must serve at least 85 percent of that sentence before becoming eligible for release.
The case was transferred to the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office due to a conflict with the 14th Circuit.
Shooting at Birthday Party
The charges stem from a Dec. 4, 2021, incident at a home in the Seabrook area. Authorities said what began as a birthday celebration escalated into violence.
Investigators determined that multiple fights broke out among attendees who had prior disputes. The situation intensified, eventually leading to gunfire.
Two Victims Killed
According to prosecutors, Mitchell shot one victim multiple times, killing her. During the shooting, one of the bullets traveled into the home and struck a second victim, who also died.
The identities of the victims were not included in the latest release.
Arrest After Months on the Run
Following the shooting, Mitchell fled the area and remained at large for several months.
He was ultimately captured in June 2022, bringing an end to the manhunt.
Case Resolution
Mitchell had originally been scheduled to stand trial in Beaufort County during the week of July 20. His guilty plea resolves the case without a trial.
Prosecutors say the incident highlights how quickly disputes can escalate into deadly violence, turning what should have been a celebration into a tragedy.
