North Charleston Police Department mourns the death of K-9 Joker

The North Charleston Police Department is mourning the loss of K-9 Joker, a highly decorated police dog who died বৃহস্পতিবার after battling cancer.

A Life of Service

K-9 Joker, born in Hungary on Dec. 5, 2019, joined the North Charleston Police Department on Feb. 24, 2021. He was paired with his handler, Corporal Braden Reid, forming a close and effective partnership within the department’s K-9 Unit.

During his service, Joker played a key role in numerous law enforcement operations, contributing to the removal of significant amounts of illegal drugs and weapons from the community.

Notable Achievements

Over the course of his career, K-9 Joker helped seize more than 50 pounds of marijuana, 2 kilograms of fentanyl, 2 kilograms of cocaine, and 3 pounds of methamphetamine.

He was also credited with helping remove 30 illegal firearms from the streets and locating and apprehending five violent suspects.

Joker and Corporal Reid were recently recognized by Police Chief Camacho for their role in quickly apprehending two homicide suspects just minutes after a crime was committed.

Battle With Cancer

In 2025, Joker was diagnosed with melanoma. After undergoing treatment, including the removal of a tumor, scans initially showed no signs of the disease.

However, the cancer later returned and spread aggressively. It was ultimately determined to be terminal and untreatable.

Final Days and Legacy

K-9 Joker passed away surrounded by his handler and fellow members of the K-9 Unit. In his final months, he remained with Corporal Reid and his family, receiving care and companionship.

The department says Joker’s service and dedication leave behind a lasting legacy, both within the force and in the community he helped protect.
