Chubby’s BBQ, the popular Cleveland County food‑truck brand, is expanding with a brick‑and‑mortar location at 238 S. Cherokee St. in downtown Kings Mountain, opening April 9. Owners Steven and Ashley Daniels will keep the food truck running while the new restaurant finds its groove.
What’s new at the Kings Mountain location
- The restaurant moves into the former Skillet space on Cherokee Street, replacing a short‑order diner with a smoke‑driven menu of brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and classic sides such as smoked mac and cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, and smoked cabbage.
- Steven Daniels told The Shelby Star that Chubby’s began as a food‑truck project after he won a local Brew & Que competition, and that the couple jumped at the chance to open a permanent spot downtown after the Skillet space became available.
Hours, menu growth, and long‑term plans
- Chubby’s will start with limited hours: open Thursday through Sunday in April, then shift to Monday–Saturday in May as the operation stabilizes.
- Aside from core barbecue plates, the Danielses plan daily specials, lighter options (like salmon), and eventually a breakfast menu, including ideas such as smoked meatloaf or rotating specials.
Role in downtown Kings Mountain
- The new restaurant joins a growing cluster of eateries and small businesses along Cherokee Street, which local guides and the Discover Kings Mountain website highlight as the city’s commercial hub.
- The family sees the location as a long‑term anchor, leaning on an active Facebook page (Chubby’s BBQ Catering) to share soft‑opening updates, promotions, and event nights, with the goal of becoming a go‑to barbecue destination across Cleveland County.
