A Historic Milestone in Real Estate Leadership

The Charleston Trident Association of Realtors (CTAR), which represents thousands of real estate professionals across the tri-county area, has been around for nearly 120 years.

For most of its history, leadership roles in the organisation were held mainly by white men. But in 2023, a major milestone was achieved when Katesha Breland became the first Black woman to serve as president.

A Journey Rooted in Real Estate

Breland has over 25 years of experience in the real estate industry. She shared that her interest in the field started early in life.

Spending summers in New York with her uncle, who was a real estate broker, she got hands-on experience by visiting properties and working in his office. This early exposure helped shape her successful career.

Recognition and Achievements

Her dedication and success did not go unnoticed. Breland was named Realtor of the Year by CTAR, recognising her strong contribution to the local real estate market.

She also serves as a broker-in-charge and has been actively involved in both state and national real estate organisations, showing her wide influence in the industry.

Breaking Barriers Over Time

CTAR was founded in 1907, and for the first 70 years, all its presidents were white men. Change came slowly over time:

  • In 1980, a white woman became president for the first time
  • Over the years, more women took leadership roles
  • In 2014, a Black man became president
  • In 2023, Breland became the first Black woman president

This journey shows how the organisation has gradually moved towards inclusivity.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

Breland says she is proud to see more diversity within the organisation today. Under her leadership, there has been an increase in representation of people of colour and women on boards and committees.

She believes that having diverse leadership helps better serve a diverse community.

Breland is not just focused on real estate but also on community development. She has supported initiatives like preserving public parks in Charleston and promoting affordable housing.
