The College of Charleston is now searching for a new head coach after a sudden change in its men’s basketball program. The decision comes just after two successful seasons under outgoing coach Chris Mack.
Chris Mack Resigns After Two Seasons
Chris Mack stepped down on Wednesday to accept a new role as head coach at the University of South Florida. During his time in Charleston, he led the team to a strong 45-20 record and helped the Cougars finish 3rd and 2nd in the Colonial Athletic Association standings.
However, his final season ended on a disappointing note when the team was knocked out in the first round of the conference tournament.
New Opportunity at South Florida
In his official statement, Mack shared his excitement about joining South Florida, calling it a program with great potential and strong leadership. His move marks a fresh chapter in his coaching career.
At the same time, College of Charleston Athletic Director Matt Roberts thanked Mack for his contribution and wished him and his family well for the future.
Contract and Buyout Details
Mack had signed a five-year contract in April 2024 worth $1.1 million per season. As per the agreement, leaving within two years requires a buyout payment.
Key details include:
- Initial buyout: $1.5 million
- Reduced buyout: $1.3 million after agreement with South Florida
- Additional condition: A home-and-home game series between both teams
This adjustment helps both schools manage the transition more smoothly.
What’s Next for College of Charleston
With Mack’s exit, the College of Charleston must now find a new head coach to continue its strong basketball legacy. The program is considered one of the top in Division I based on its winning percentage.
The focus will now be on:
- Finding a capable replacement
- Maintaining team performance
- Preparing for the upcoming season
