The body of William Singleton, a 44-year-old man from James Island, has been recovered after he went missing on Johns Island on Saturday. According to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office, Singleton’s body was discovered following a multi-agency search operation.
Search and Recovery
The search for Singleton began after the U.S. Coast Guard was alerted to an unmanned 21-foot skiff floating in the Stono River. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) joined the response, and divers later recovered Singleton’s body from the water.

Singleton, who was known by friends and locals as “Rakeem”, is being remembered as a beloved figure in the community. Many have taken to social media to describe him as a “true Charleston legend,” with heartfelt tributes expressing grief over his untimely death.
Details of the Incident
The owner of Captain Harry’s Fishing Supply confirmed that Singleton was not out on the water for leisure but was working as a commercial fisherman at the time of the incident. According to reports, he fell overboard while working.
Boating Safety Reminder
The tragic incident has highlighted the importance of boating safety. Joe Steinman, club manager at Ripley Light Marina and the Charleston Boat Club, shared advice for boaters.
“The biggest thing is don’t panic if you are by yourself,” Steinman said. He also emphasized the critical importance of wearing a life jacket and using the kill switch when out on the water.
