Mount Pleasant, S.C., authorities with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) have closed managed islands like Crab Bank, Deveaux Bank, and Bird Key in Charleston County to kick off coastal bird breeding season.
Breeding Season Start
Species such as laughing gulls, brown pelicans, terns, and oystercatchers arrive in March to mate and nest on these flat, predator-free barrier beaches. SCDNR wildlife biologist Janet Thibault noted the first oystercatcher nest appeared Wednesday at Deveaux Bank, with birds laying camouflaged eggs directly in sand divots.
Protection Measures
Human presence stresses the birds, causing them to abandon nests; closures last until October 15 to prevent disturbance. Recent marsh restoration at Crab Bank removed invasive grasses, enhancing habitat for black skimmers, amid ongoing population declines for many shorebirds.
Viewing Guidelines
Volunteers like Elizabeth Anderegg advise observing from boats or water edges to enjoy the spectacles safely without impacting the fragile sites. Respecting boundaries supports their return and survival.
