North Charleston, S.C., residents and leaders are rallying to support unpaid TSA workers at Charleston International Airport amid a partial government shutdown.

Community Efforts

Pilots from Charleston have teamed with D’Allesandro’s Pizza to deliver lunches and boost morale for the affected screeners. Former Mayor Keith Summey and Charleston County School District Superintendent Anita Huggins are now organizing a food and essentials drive today, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at District Four Stadium on Montague Avenue.

Requested Donations

Volunteers seek nonperishable food, detergent, hand towels, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and hygiene items—all to be distributed directly to TSA staff working without pay. Summey emphasized their vital airport safety role, while Huggins highlighted ties to local school families.

Leaders’ Statements

Summey, a former airport board member, stressed community duty: “These individuals show up every day to keep travelers safe.” Huggins added: “Our community stands with them.” Residents and businesses are urged to participate.
