Shane Shahan, a California man, received a sentence of 19 years to life for second-degree murder after causing a fatal 2023 car crash in Fresno by speeding through a red light at nearly 80 mph while drunk and high on marijuana. He fled the scene despite looking back at the wreckage and dying passenger Jesse Espino, a 35-year-old who succumbed to his injuries.

Crash Details

Shahan, driving a Chevrolet Colorado, collided with a Hyundai Elantra at First Street and McKinley Avenue, flipping his truck but escaping unharmed. Trial video showed him glancing at the crash before running, and officers later noted his alcohol odor, profuse sweating, and erratic speech when apprehended nearby. He had prior DUI convictions in 2016 and 2017, was on probation for the latter, and failed to call 911 despite having a phone.

Jurors convicted him in under an hour on charges including murder, hit-and-run resulting in death, and driving with a suspended license. Fresno County judge highlighted his “multiple bad decisions and selfish decisions” at sentencing, imposing the maximum term.

Victim Impact

Jesse Espino’s sister Crystal described losing her only sibling and the family’s irreversible change, while father Edward shared the haunting image of saying goodbye in the hospital.
