TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A South Carolina woman is charged with grand theft after allegedly scamming a Leon County woman out of thousands of dollars, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced.

Details of the Scam and Victim’s Response

Brenda Huggins, 56, is accused of calling the victim in 2025, claiming she had missed jury duty and there was a warrant for her arrest. Investigators said Huggins instructed the victim to pay fines using prepaid debit cards that were purchased at several Leon County businesses.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Agents identified Huggins as the person withdrawing the victim’s money from ATMs in South Carolina. According to FDLE, Huggins was arrested on February 10 and is awaiting extradition to Florida. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference on Thursday to warn the public about an increase in similar scams.
