The Aiken Mayor has announced several significant infrastructure projects to accommodate the city’s rapid growth and improve community amenities. Key projects include:
Development approvals for seventeen new housing projects covering 1,327 acres between Richland Avenue and Interstate 20, which could bring nearly 4,500 new housing units and over 10,000 new residents in the short term. This population increase will require substantial infrastructure upgrades, particularly to water, sewer, and roads.
A new drinking water plant is under construction to meet the demand, with ongoing plans to upgrade the Horse Creek Wastewater Plant to address sewage capacity issues.
Large waterline extensions are underway, including a 9,100 linear feet phase and a further extension of 8,625 feet to reach new residential developments, allowing service expansion toward Interstate 20 Exit 29 to enable more growth opportunities north of Aiken.
Several subdivisions, such as University Townhomes, Bridge Creek, Woodhaven, Coopers Place, and Bedford Place, have secured or are seeking water and sewer service approvals, reflecting growing residential development efforts supported by infrastructure enhancements.
The city is also strategically expanding its boundaries through targeted annexations, including creative property acquisitions facilitating continued growth areas like Toolebeck Commons for 157 homes.
Road infrastructure improvements are anticipated to accommodate increased traffic, with major corridors like University Parkway, York Street, Rutland Drive, Highway 19N, Wire Road, and Highway 1 North expected to experience heavy use, necessitating future traffic management plans.
Overall, the mayor’s infrastructure initiatives focus on expanding and upgrading water and sewer systems, supporting housing developments, and planning for increased traffic, positioning Aiken for sustainable growth and enhanced livability for its expanding population in 2025 and beyond.
