New residents of Myrtle Beach should be aware of several important local rules and regulations that help maintain public safety, environmental protection, and community quality of life.
Beach and Ocean Rules
Swimming is only allowed within 50 yards from shore and shallower than shoulder depth. Jumping or diving from piers and swimming within 75 yards of piers are prohibited.
From May 15 to September 15, tents are banned on the beach; only circular umbrellas up to 7.5 feet in diameter are allowed in designated lines.
Sleeping on the beach or beach access areas is prohibited between 9 PM and sunrise.
It is illegal to build fires or use propane grills on the beach.
No glass containers or open alcohol containers are allowed on the beach. Possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages are restricted to those over 21.
Protecting the environment is important: cutting or damaging sea oats, beach grass, or sand fencing is illegal.
Driving or operating any motor vehicle on the beach is unlawful.
Soliciting on the beach or public property is illegal.
Discharging fireworks within city limits is prohibited.
Littering—including cigarette butts—is illegal and fined, with possible jail time.
Short-Term Rentals (STR) and Housing Rules
STR owners must obtain an annual permit, have a designated local agent available 24/7 within one hour’s response time, maintain proper business licensing, and comply with tax requirements.
STR operators must provide guests with city regulation information and a “Good Neighbor Brochure” to ensure community standards are upheld.
General Living Advantages and Community
Myrtle Beach is known for its affordable cost of living, mild year-round climate, and welcoming community atmosphere, making it attractive for new residents from all walks of life.
The city experiences rapid growth in tourism and housing markets but balances growth with regulation to preserve residents’ quality of life.
These local rules cover safety, environmental stewardship, and community standards critical for new residents to understand and follow in Myrtle Beach. Being aware of and adhering to these regulations will help new residents enjoy their life while contributing positively to the community.
