Augusta, Georgia. – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office stated on Monday that one of its deputies had been sacked and arrested following an investigation.
Diana Santiago, an RCSO employee since May 2020, was hauled in for questioning in connection with a criminal investigation, according to the sheriff’s office, on Oct. 20 at around 3:45 p.m.
Santiago was then charged with violating his oath of office, conspiring to purchase or possess a controlled substance, and engaging in unlawful street gang activity. He was lodged into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
The sheriff’s office says the inquiry is still ongoing.
Sheriff Eugene Brantley issued the following statement after Santiago’s arrest and termination, which became effective immediately:
“We will not allow anyone in our ranks engaging in criminal crimes or conduct that undermines public trust. The vast majority of our deputies serve honestly and tirelessly every day to protect and serve the people of Richmond County. I applaud the investigators who handled this matter properly and carefully. Accountability begins inside our own agency, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to maintain the integrity of this office and the trust of our community.”
