A fire gutted the abandoned Columbia apartment building early Saturday morning

A fire that started early Saturday morning at an abandoned apartment building has been extinguished, according to Columbia-Richland Fire Department officials.

The department reported that third-shift crews arrived at the 1700 block of Washington Street around 1 a.m. and began moving through the building, while additional crews attacked the fire from above.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire, but all ten units in the building were damaged. However, there were no injuries reported.

Columbia Fire said the fire marshal’s office is looking into what caused the fire.
