Richland County man charged after a double shooting at South Carolina State University

Orangeburg, South Carolina — An 18-year-old Richland County resident has been detained and charged in connection with one of two gunshots that occurred Saturday night on the South Carolina State University campus.
Matthew Daniel McCoy was charged by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) with pointing and showing a pistol to a person, as well as carrying a weapon on school grounds. The allegations come from a gunshot incident that injured one guy on October 4, 2025. McCoy was detained and booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center on Sunday.

The incident is one of two shootings that took place on campus Saturday evening. In another, separate event, a woman was slain. The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has yet to announce her identify.

Both investigations are active and ongoing, and authorities have stated that they do not believe the two shootings are related at this time.

South Carolina State University’s Department of Public Safety requested that SLED conduct an investigation. The First Circuit Solicitor’s Office will pursue McCoy’s case.
