Mecklenburg Sheriff announces prospective partnership with rapper sparking local outrage

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office shared a photo of Sheriff Garry McFadden sitting close to a well-known rapper on Saturday evening.

In the post, McFadden was seen sitting on a couch next to DaBaby, both holding peace signs. It arrived with the promise of more to come.

“Yesterday, Sheriff McFadden sat down with DaBaby to discuss important issues and potential collaborations,” according to the post. “Stay tuned to what’s cooking up.”

Comments on the post ranged from ecstatic to disbelieving.

DaBaby had recently visited Charlotte.

The rapper recently filmed a song video on the Charlotte Area Transit System Light Rail that depicted the tragedy of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who was stabbed to death on the Light Rail in August.

The video for “Save Me” showed a segment of the surveillance footage leading up to Zarutska’s death before switching to a similar sequence performed by actors playing Zarutska and her assailant, DeCarlos Brown Jr.

The video concludes with DaBaby, who was sitting nearby, interrupting the attack and saving the actor portraying Zarutska before Brown’s character is led off the train by security guards.

CATS informed Channel 9 that DaBaby did not have permission to film the music video on the light rail. However, the video was shot there and reported on the CATS-Pass app. ‘

The footage shows DaBaby’s film crew being taken off the train by CATS security.

The song itself does not appear to mention Zarutska.

DaBaby is no new to controversies. In April 2022, someone trespassed on his Troutman property and was shot in the leg. In social media posts, the rapper appeared to acknowledge to being the triggerman, but no charges were brought.

In 2018, DaBaby murdered 19-year-old Jaylin Craig inside a Huntersville Walmart. He claimed it was an act of self-defense, but he was never charged with the shooting.

No other information has been made accessible.
