North Charleston, South Carolina – Two men are being charged in connection with a North Charleston burglary and standoff.
Officers from the North Charleston Police Department arrived at a residence on Kent Avenue about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday after a resident reported a burglary.
Arriving officers reported seeing a man flee the scene and leap a fence.
“Investigators obtained information that the suspect may have sought refuge in a home on Bailey Drive. Officers made contact with a man working on a vehicle in the backyard, who permitted them to check the garage but refused a K-9 search and subsequently stopped cooperating,” the agency stated.
The suspect’s mother arrived on the scene and attempted to encourage her son to surrender to law authorities; however, police stated the attempt failed.
The North Charleston Police Department sent a drone team to examine the area and watch the trunk of a vehicle at the scene. Police said the camera showed the man hiding in the garage and briefly appearing in the doorway.
“Officers tried calling out the suspect again, but he refused to comply. A K-9 unit was subsequently deployed inside the garage, and the subject was successfully flushed out,” according to the NCPD.
Gerbrell Deangelo Choice, 18, was arrested and charged with burglary in the second degree.
Meanwhile, police said a second man at the property, 58-year-old Robert Griffin, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to a felony for allegedly assisting the suspect in evading arrest.
Both males were booked at the Al Cannon Detention Centre.
