AUGUSTA, Georgia – Some much-needed resources were distributed Saturday at the Hope After Helene event in Augusta.
Volunteers included Richmond County School System employees and members of the Greater Young Zion Baptist Church.
Bags of groceries were distributed at Glenn Hills Middle School, one of four school distribution locations.
According to Principal Marvin Washington, last year the school provided hot meals for the community after the hurricane hit the area, and when asked if they would help out again, they were eager to do so.
“We just came out, we got together, and everyone did what they could to ensure that our families had food to eat. Many of our volunteers from last year returned this year. And it’s been a wonderful collaboration among all of the churches that put this together,” Washington explained.
Shontae Boyd, a District 4 Richmond County School Board member, was also present.
“The Richmond County School System is participating because we know there are still many students and staff in need in the community. And so we wanted to come out and help participate, pass out food supplies, groceries, and necessities, and just make sure that everyone knows there is a school system and that we are doing our part by being present in whatever way we could,” she explained.
Nola Waltower is a freshman at Faith Christian Academy in Waynesboro, while Briana Darren is a junior at Silver Bluff High School. They both wanted to volunteer at the event.
“I came out to volunteer to help those in need who need food because we don’t know what they’re going through,” Waltower reported.
“I came to volunteer because I love helping people and i want to make sure they’re fed and everything’s okay,” Darren told me.
Each site provided food to more than 300 families.
