RIDGEVILLE, South Carolina – Volvo is commemorating a milestone anniversary in the United States, and Governor Henry McMcMaster will attend a special ceremony in Berkeley County on Tuesday.
The automobile company is celebrating 70 years in the United States and ten years of production in South Carolina.
Volvo was founded in Sweden in 1927 and arrived in the United States in 1955, with the first PV 444 unloaded at a port in Long Beach, California, according to the company’s website.
The brand’s reputation in the automobile sector continued to increase. Years later, in 2018, the company opened its first production factory in the United States, in Charleston, South Carolina (Ridgeville).
In 2015, the corporation announced plans to build operations in Berkeley County. At the time, Volvo executives stated that their selection was influenced by a number of reasons, including proximity to the South Carolina Ports Authority, education, and an established workforce in the car sector.
Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which were already functioning in the state, were key players.
“They have paved the way for us because there are suppliers already in the state, there is a workforce in the state, and the fact that they’re so happy means there is also a good business environment,” stated then-Volvo of North America CEO Lex Kerssemakers in a 2015 press release.
The ceremony will take place at Volvo’s Ridgeville factory on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
