Cherokee County, South Carolina – The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office claimed that one man was detained after a missing man’s remains were discovered at a house.
On August 22, Cherokee deputies carried out a search warrant at a home on Robbs School Road in Gaffney. During the search, deputies discovered human remains in the backyard of the property.
On September 15, the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office identified the remains as Kevin Scott Brookshire, a man who had been missing in Chesnee for more than three years.
After an inquiry, the culprit was identified as 21-year-old John Lucas Rice. Rice was apprehended in Shelby, North Carolina, and reportedly confessed to Brookshire’s murder in December 2021 during an interview with Cherokee County investigators.
Rice was arrested for murder on Friday, September 19 and denied bond on Saturday, September 20. The Sheriff’s Office has not provided a plausible motive for the murder.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation is underway.
