As the nation commemorates 24 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the Lowcountry of South Carolina will host several events to honor the victims, first responders, and military personnel impacted by the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Here are the key events taking place in the Charleston area to mark the anniversary in 2025.
Memorial Runs & Stair Climbs
US Coast Guard Sector Charleston will kick off the day’s memorials with a stair climb at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. This event is held in remembrance of the 412 first responders who lost their lives while saving others on 9/11. The climb starts at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 11. Later in the day, the Steps of Honor event will take place at Johnson Hagood Stadium from 6-9 p.m., providing another opportunity to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives.
On Saturday, September 13, the Travis Manion Foundation’s 9/11 Heroes Run will take place on Daniel Island, starting at 8 a.m. This annual event honors the first responders and military service members who have fought in the wars following the 9/11 attacks. Service Opportunity
The Charleston Habitat for Humanity is hosting a 9/11 Day of Service to bring the community together for a hands-on volunteer project. This event will unite first responders, veterans, AmeriCorps members, and local residents as they work on a construction project followed by a time of reflection and gathering. Memorial Motorcycle Ride
On Saturday, September 13, the 5th Annual Lowcountry 9/11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride will begin and end at Lowcountry Harley Davidson in North Charleston. The ride kicks off at 11 a.m., with the event partnering with WakeUp Carolina this year. Participants can enjoy free breakfast, lunch, raffles, giveaways, and guest speakers. It’s a chance to pay tribute while enjoying the camaraderie of the community.
Other Events
In Summerville, Carolyn Lewis K8 School is hosting a special breakfast for first responder family members at the school. From 7:35 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. on Thursday, September 11, first responder parents will be treated to a special meal, while CLS students can enjoy breakfast from the school cafeteria.
