A battered and bloodied teenager fatally shot a father during his son's baptism. Now he claims self-defense

What began as a joyful family gathering in Balch Springs, Texas, ended in tragedy when 35-year-old Cristian Gabriel Montes was fatally shot during his son’s baptism and daughter’s birthday celebration on July 27.

Shooting at a Family Party

According to police reports and witness accounts, the shooting happened shortly after midnight. Witnesses identified 19-year-old Leonardo Campos Torres as the gunman. He was arrested on the scene by Balch Springs police officers.

Authorities later confirmed that Torres and Montes were distant relatives. The shooting followed a heated argument that escalated quickly during the celebration.

What Led to the Shooting?

According to an affidavit obtained by the San Luis Obispo Tribune, witnesses said Torres had been firing a handgun in the driveway near his Chevrolet Tahoe earlier in the night.

Montes confronted Torres about his reckless behavior.

A verbal argument turned into a physical altercation.

During the fight, Torres allegedly drew a firearm and shot Montes.

Medical reports from Baylor University Medical Center state that Montes was shot twice, including once in the back, suggesting he may have been turning away or falling when the bullet struck.

Torres’ Arrest and Claims

After being detained, Torres reportedly confessed to the shooting, but he claimed it was an act of self-defense, according to KDFW.

A mugshot released by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office shows Torres with bruises, cuts, and a swollen, bloodied face.

Family members dispute his claim. Cristal Flores, a cousin of the victim who attended the party, said Torres’ injuries were the result of him being restrained by others when he allegedly tried to flee before police arrived, not from self-defense.

Community in Shock

The fatal shooting has left Montes’ family and the local community devastated. What was meant to be a day of celebration for his children became an unthinkable loss. Relatives say Montes was trying to protect his family when he confronted Torres about his dangerous actions.

The case highlights how a family gathering spiraled into a deadly conflict fueled by reckless behavior and a firearm. Torres now faces murder charges, while Montes’ family mourns the tragic loss of a father whose life was cut short at what should have been a joyful occasion.
