Laps and planks: Dad and girlfriend killed 10-year-old child by torturing her with 'exercise as punishment' with no food or water, DA says

A disturbing case from Apache County, Arizona has brought national attention to the tragic death of 10-year-old Rebekah Baptiste, who was allegedly subjected to extreme and long-term abuse by her father, Richard Baptiste, and stepmother, Anicia Woods. According to prosecutors, what began as “discipline” spiraled into torture, resulting in her death and criminal charges against the couple.

Gruesome Discipline Behind Closed Doors

Prosecutors say Rebekah endured harsh punishments including being forced to run laps and hold plank positions around the apartment. Her parents also reportedly used spankings and beatings with a belt. In interviews with police, both Baptiste and Woods admitted to these disciplinary methods. Richard Baptiste even described hitting Rebekah with a belt 10 times, ranking the pain as 7 out of 10, and admitting to using excessive force.

Despite the obvious signs of mistreatment, Rebekah reportedly made up stories to protect her parents—a heartbreaking detail that highlights the psychological impact the abuse had on her.

Escape Attempts and Desperate Acts

Court documents reveal that Rebekah once jumped from a second-story apartment window in Phoenix, attempting to escape the abuse. When questioned, her parents claimed she was just trying to reach a nearby well for water and to find someone who might help her—an indirect acknowledgment of how desperate and isolated she must have felt.

Tragic Ending: Rebekah’s Final Hours

On July 27, Rebekah was taken to a small medical clinic in Holbrook, unconscious and unresponsive. Due to the severity of her condition, she was quickly transferred to a hospital. She died the next day. Doctors concluded her injuries were from “non-accidental trauma.”

Two days later, on July 29, both Baptiste and Woods were arrested and booked on multiple charges. Authorities say the family had been living in a remote rural area of Apache County, making them hard to track.

Younger Siblings Also Victims of Abuse

The abuse didn’t stop with Rebekah. Her 8-year-old and 6-year-old siblings also showed signs of physical punishment, including scratches, bruises, and reports of being unfed. Between November 2023 and May 2025, the children made multiple comments at school about their punishment—but often changed their stories to protect their parents.

In one instance, a child first said he was scratched for not cleaning, then later changed the story to say he was playing outside and fell. These flip-flopping stories made it difficult for authorities and educators to take decisive action earlier.

Warning Signs Ignored for Years

The Department of Child Safety (DCS) confirmed that, at the time of Rebekah’s death, they were already investigating a report filed on May 19, 2025, regarding abuse of her siblings. Officials said they were actively trying to locate the family when the fatal incident occurred.

Even more troubling, DCS had been receiving reports since 2015 about possible abuse within the family, but claimed no evidence ever surfaced to support those allegations. In January 2025, DCS investigated claims that Rebekah was forced to run as punishment without access to water or bathroom breaks. That report, too, was ruled unsubstantiated due to lack of evidence.

Prosecutors Seek Justice for Rebekah

Apache County prosecutors are now trying to bring the case to trial, pushing to try both parents together. Charges include those related to Rebekah’s death and the ongoing abuse of her two siblings.

This case has raised major questions about how child abuse investigations are handled, especially when warning signs are repeatedly reported but not acted upon.
