What Is the New Illinois Law About?
Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed a new law that takes strong action against PFAS chemicals in firefighter gear. These chemicals, used for fire and water resistance, are known to build up in the body and cause serious health problems.

Starting January 1, 2026: Manufacturers and sellers must clearly inform buyers if their firefighting gear contains PFAS.
Starting January 1, 2027: It will be illegal to manufacture, sell, or distribute firefighting gear in Illinois that intentionally includes PFAS.
This law is part of the PFAS Reduction Act and was officially filed on August 15, 2025, as Public Act 104-0221.
Why Are PFAS Chemicals Dangerous?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily in the environment or in the human body. Over time, they build up and can lead to serious health conditions, such as:

Illinois Senate: 58-0 (May 2025)
Support also came from major firefighter organisations, like the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois, who believe this law will help reduce long-term health problems in the firefighting community.
