A tragic incident in Madbury, New Hampshire, is under investigation as a suspected murder-suicide after a family of four was found dead inside their home. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office confirmed the investigation in a press release on Monday, August 18. Law enforcement authorities have been actively investigating the deaths, which occurred at a residence on Moharimet Drive.
The Discovery of the Bodies
According to New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, the investigation was launched after a caller reported multiple deceased individuals at the residence. When state troopers arrived on the scene, they found the 911 caller and entered the home, where they discovered the bodies of four family members: two adults and two children.
“The troopers found the bodies of four family members: two adults and two children,” Formella told WBZ-TV. “A third child, a toddler, was alive and suffered no physical injuries.”
The deceased family members have been identified as 34-year-old Emily Long, 48-year-old Ryan Long, and their children—8-year-old Parker Long and 6-year-old Ryan Long. All four were found with gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Murder-Suicide Investigation
At this time, authorities are investigating the deaths as a potential murder-suicide, but the shooter’s identity has not been confirmed. An autopsy, scheduled for Wednesday, August 20, is expected to provide more details regarding the cause and manner of death.
The AG’s office assured the public that there was no known threat to the community, although a police presence will continue in the area as the investigation progresses.
Community Shock and Grief
Neighbors expressed disbelief at the tragedy, describing the family as a “perfect” and well-known part of the community. Bevy Ketel, a neighbor, told WBZ-TV that her daughter had once gifted an American Girl doll to one of the children who tragically lost their life.
“It was shocking,” Ketel said. “It’s so sad to think that that little girl is gone.”
Ketel also spoke highly of Ryan Long, who was a school psychologist at Oyster River Middle School in Durham. “He certainly touched a lot of lives,” Ketel said, adding that he was an integral part of the community.
Authorities and Next Steps
While authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, they are urging residents to remain calm as their investigation continues. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office has stated that more information will be released after the autopsies are conducted.
“The cause and manner of death will be determined following the autopsies,” Formella added. “At this time, we ask for patience as we work through the investigation.”
