San Francisco Bay Area Beaches Face Rip Current and Sneaker Wave Risk Through Tuesday

San Francisco, Calif. – Dangerous beach conditions will continue along the Bay Area’s south-facing shores through Tuesday due to a strong southwest swell. This swell is fueling rip currents, sneaker waves, and large tide swings, posing risks even for experienced swimmers and surfers.

Hazards on Local Beaches

The National Weather Service in Monterey reports that long-period waves from the swell can knock people off rocks and jetties or pull swimmers into deeper waters. The cold ocean temperatures also make it harder for swimmers to reach safety.

Affected Areas:

Ocean Beach (San Francisco)

Half Moon Bay

Santa Cruz

Monterey Bay

Safety Recommendations:

Stay well back from the waterline.

Never turn your back on the ocean.

Keep a close eye on children and pets.

Wear life jackets if heading onto boats or paddleboards.

Outlook

The hazard will persist through Tuesday night before easing midweek. However, forecasters warn that another swell could impact the area later this month, and more beach hazard advisories are possible if conditions worsen.
