Three Alto residents were arrested for allegedly stealing items from shipping containers following a train derailment in East Hall, Georgia.
Arrests Made After Suspicious Activity
On Sunday, May 24, Hall County deputies responded to a 911 call about suspicious activity near shipping containers along the railroad tracks at Old Cornelia Highway and Yonah-Homer Road.
Items Recovered
- Mark Anthony Purdy, 53: Three cases of 12-count trash bags and six mixing bowl sets in his vehicle
- Brianna Nicole Ayers, 28, and James Bradley Ayers, 60: Two cases of 12-count trash bags, three cases of breakfast cereal, three cases of 24-count Propel water, and a table in their vehicle
Background
The shipping containers were left beside the tracks after a Norfolk Southern train derailed on May 21 following a collision with a tractor-trailer. Cleanup and track repairs caused multiple railroad crossing closures.
Charges and Release
All three suspects were charged with second-degree burglary and theft of cargo, both felonies. They posted $8,650 bond each and were released on May 26.
Train Derailment Impact
The derailment caused major disruptions to rail traffic and road access but did not result in serious injuries. Norfolk Southern crews continue cleanup operations at the site.
