COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team gave fans a night to cheer for as they earned their fourth shutout of the season, beating The Citadel 4-0 on Tuesday, April 15, at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park. With a solid mix of strong pitching and timely hitting, the Gamecocks looked in full control from the start.

Gamecock Pitchers Combine for Seven Strikeouts

Four South Carolina pitchers—Jackson Soucie, Tyler Pitzer, Ashton Crowther, and Parker Marlatt—combined to keep The Citadel off the scoreboard all night. They gave up only seven hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters.

Starter Jackson Soucie gave the team a strong beginning, striking out five while giving up just three hits and one walk. Tyler Pitzer, who came in next, picked up the win with 2.1 innings of one-hit baseball. Ashton Crowther continued his good form by allowing only one hit in 2.1 innings and striking out one batter. Parker Marlatt closed the game in the ninth inning, striking out one and giving up one hit.

Early Runs Secure the Game for Carolina

The Gamecocks didn’t waste time getting on the board. In the second inning, KJ Scobey hit his fourth home run of the season, setting the tone for the game. That same inning, Ethan Petry knocked in a run with a single, and Beau Hollins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, pushing the score to 3-0.

Carolina added one more in the third inning, thanks to an RBI single by Gavin Braland, which made it 4-0. From there, the pitchers did the rest, keeping The Citadel scoreless the entire game.

Kaczmar Leads the Offense

Henry Kaczmar stood out at the plate with two hits, including a double. He has now reached base in 20 straight games, showing great consistency and form.

Postgame Notes

This was South Carolina’s first shutout since their 1-0 win over Morehead State on March 9. It also marked another great outing for Crowther, who has now retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced in games against Texas A&M and The Citadel.

The Gamecocks’ 4-0 win over The Citadel was a team effort, with powerful pitching and early scoring playing key roles. With strong performances from both the mound and the batter’s box, this game showed why South Carolina remains a strong competitor this season. Fans will be hoping the team keeps up this form as the season progresses.
