The beauty and health of Kiawah Island’s marshes are vital to the island’s ecosystem — and now, you have a chance to play a part in preserving them.
The Kiawah Conservancy, in collaboration with the Kiawah Island Golf Resort and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is launching a new and exciting environmental initiative as part of the South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement (SCORE) Program.
This hands-on reef restoration project focuses on the construction of Manufactured Wire Reefs (MWRs) — specially designed structures that serve as a sustainable surface for oyster larvae to attach and grow. These reefs will be strategically placed within the marsh at Mingo Point, helping to promote healthy oyster populations and strengthen the island’s natural defenses against erosion and storm surge.
Volunteers are needed! Whether you’re a local resident, a visitor, or an environmental enthusiast, this is a great opportunity to give back to the island and make a lasting ecological impact.
🌿 What You’ll Do:
Help build MWRs that will be installed directly in the marsh.
🌊 Why It Matters:
Oyster reefs improve water quality, create marine habitats, and protect the shoreline.
🛠 No Experience Necessary:
All training and materials will be provided — just bring your enthusiasm!
📍 Location: Mingo Point, Kiawah Island
📅 Date: Ongoing project — volunteers are needed throughout the season.
