Driver accused of driving into North Charleston grocery shop and fleeing

North Charleston Police arrested 34-year-old Hector Gonzalez Jr. from Goose Creek after he crashed a vehicle into B&M Grocery on Reynolds Avenue around 4 p.m. on Saturday. Security footage and city cameras captured the impact, which caused significant structural damage to the building.

Incident Details

Gonzalez drove at excessive speed on Proctor Street amid wet, icy conditions from a recent winter storm with snow and freezing rain. He fled the scene, running through stop signs at Proctor/Ubank Streets and Kraft Avenue/Tulip Street intersections. His driver’s license was suspended for unpaid traffic tickets.

Charges and Detention

He faces charges of reckless driving, driving under suspension (first offense), and leaving the scene of a collision with a fixture. Gonzalez was booked into Al Cannon Detention Center. This case underscores risks of suspended licenses and poor driving in bad weather, common in Lowcountry winter storms.
