It has been nearly four months since Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, was allegedly taken from her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood by a masked man wearing gloves.
Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect, revealed a motive, or located a body. More than $1.2 million in combined reward money has reportedly been offered for information connected to the case.
Retired Detective Suggests “Wrench Attack” Theory
As the investigation continues, retired law enforcement executive Lisa J. Miller has suggested that the case may involve what cybercrime experts call a “wrench attack.”
Miller, a former official with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, explained that a wrench attack happens when criminals use threats, violence, or kidnapping to force victims to hand over passwords, financial information, or money instead of using traditional hacking methods.
According to Miller, parts of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance appear consistent with this kind of crime, although she described the situation as unusual.
Surveillance Footage Raises Questions
A key part of the investigation reportedly involves a man captured on a Nest doorbell camera outside Guthrie’s home. The individual was allegedly seen both on the day of the disappearance and several weeks earlier.
Miller told Fox News Digital that the suspect’s appearance and behavior seemed unsophisticated, but she also pointed to elements of the case that appeared highly organized.
She suggested that some cybercriminal groups operate internationally and often know how to hide their digital activity while coordinating crimes from countries without extradition agreements with the United States.
Questions Over Ransom Demands
Miller also said she believes at least some ransom demands linked to the case may have been genuine.
According to reports, federal investigators had Savannah Guthrie and her family record videos during the investigation, something Miller believes would not have happened unless authorities thought there was a credible threat.
One man, identified as 42-year-old Derrick Callella from California, has already been arrested after allegedly sending a fake ransom demand connected to the case.
Authorities Have Not Confirmed Theory
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has not confirmed the wrench attack theory.
In a statement, officials said they had not received reports connected to similar attacks in the area and confirmed that the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active.
Authorities added that significant updates would be released publicly when available.
Community Remembers Dark History
Local media reports have also drawn comparisons to past crimes in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood, including a series of attacks carried out by a criminal known as the “Prime Time Rapist” during the 1980s.
Residents told local reporters they are troubled by renewed national attention tied to violent crime in the area. However, some community members also said the neighborhood has remained close-knit during difficult times.
