A Georgia man, Stanley Nathaniel Elliott, 75, has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of killing his neighbor, 44-year-old Anthony Collins, over a dispute involving Collins’ dogs. Elliott was convicted of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He will serve life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years.
The Fatal Incident
The shooting occurred on February 25, 2021, in Lawrenceville, a northeastern suburb of Atlanta. On that afternoon, Collins was walking his Jack Russell puppies when Elliott approached him with a gun. Following an argument, Elliott shot Collins, leaving him dead in the parking lot near his own car. The incident took place outside the Meadow Trace neighborhood, near the community pool and tennis courts.
Prior Altercation and Investigation
This was not the first conflict between Elliott and Collins over the dogs. In December 2020, Elliott had previously tried to beat Collins’ dogs with a metal pole, according to witnesses. The defendant was known to use the same pole to fend off stray dogs in the neighborhood.
After the shooting, Gwinnett County police identified Elliott through surveillance footage and later found the gun used in the slaying hidden in a motorboat in his garage.
Statement from District Attorney
Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson condemned the deadly violence, stating, “Violence – and especially deadly violence – is not the answer for solving any dispute.”
Elliott’s life sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of escalating conflicts, with tragic outcomes resulting from unresolved personal disputes.
