Berkeley County Deputies Issue Over 150 Citations During Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown

Berkeley County deputies in South Carolina stepped up traffic enforcement over Memorial Day weekend, issuing more than 150 citations and making several arrests, officials reported.

Holiday Traffic Enforcement

From May 22 to May 24, deputies focused on speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations as part of a countywide safety operation. Speeding accounted for the majority of citations, and deputies also issued 113 warnings during the three-day period.

Arrests and Vehicle Recoveries

The sheriff’s office reported several additional enforcement actions, including:

  • Two arrests for wanted individuals
  • Two ICE warrants served
  • A case involving a habitual traffic offender
  • Recovery of a stolen dirt bike
  • Eleven vehicles and motorbikes towed

One notable incident involved a juvenile riding a stolen dirt bike in the Carnes Crossroads Publix parking lot. Deputies recovered the bike and contacted the child’s parents. Several other e-bike stops over the weekend also required parental pickup.

No Fatal Crashes Reported

Sheriff Duane Lewis noted that no fatal crashes occurred during the holiday enforcement period, a key measure of the campaign’s success.

“Memorial Day weekend is a time for families and friends to gather, but it is also one of the deadliest travel weekends of the year,” Lewis said. “Our deputies remained committed to keeping our roadways safe through education and enforcement.”

The sheriff’s office emphasized that traffic safety is a year-round priority and encouraged drivers to follow speed limits, avoid distractions, never drive impaired, and always wear a seatbelt.
