The Citadel captured its first Southern Conference Baseball Tournament title in more than a decade, defeating Samford 3-1 at Fluor Field on May 23. The victory also earned the Bulldogs the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Standout Performances Lead Bulldogs to Victory

Pitcher Will Holmes delivered seven strong innings, giving up just one run, two hits, and striking out 10, earning his seventh win of the season. Despite pitching on only two days’ rest, Holmes was dominant with his fastball and slider, keeping Samford hitters off balance.

Michael Gibson, named tournament MVP, was equally instrumental. He went 14 for 23 at the plate during the tournament, hitting a home run and four doubles, scoring 12 runs, and driving in 13 RBIs. Gibson also made three bullpen appearances, recording his third save of the tournament.

Jayden Williams contributed with three hits in the championship game, helping the Bulldogs secure the 3-1 victory.

Coach Russell Triplett Praises Team Effort

The Citadel’s coach, Russell Triplett, emphasized that the team’s success was a collective effort. “We had guys step up when we really needed them to. I’m so happy for them,” Triplett said. He also highlighted Michael Gibson’s leadership, noting that his character elevated the entire team.

Triplett challenged the Bulldogs early in the season with games against elite programs like Florida State, Kentucky, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, and South Carolina. While the team struggled against some top opponents, these matchups helped prepare them for the intensity of the tournament.

Championship Game Highlights

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead against Samford. AJ Anderson walked, Gibson was hit by a pitch, and Christian Stratis singled to score Anderson. Zach Hunt followed with a single to bring Gibson home, giving The Citadel a 2-0 advantage.

Samford scored once in the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth with back-to-back doubles from Hunt and Sam Dansky, sealing the 3-1 victory. Both Hunt and Stratis finished with multi-hit games.

Looking Ahead to the NCAA Tournament

The Citadel will make its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance. D1 Baseball projected the Bulldogs as a No. 3 seed in the Auburn Regional. The team will learn its regional placement during the NCAA selection show on May 25, televised on ESPN at noon.

Coach Triplett expressed confidence in the team’s chances, noting that their strong finish and experience against elite competition make them ready for the NCAA stage.
