A 75-year-old Wisconsin man has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a friend during a casual gathering at a hunting property.

Incident Details

Brent Hofman, of Shawano County, allegedly shot 67-year-old Ricky Roundy in November 2025 inside a detached garage. Hofman had been drinking whisky with Roundy and another friend when he reportedly said, “I hope you’ll excuse me if I have to kill you guys,” before picking up a pistol and firing.

Witness Account

The surviving friend, identified as “Victim #2,” told investigators Hofman “just starts to shoot for no reason,” hitting Roundy. The witness fled, locked himself in a building, grabbed a .22-caliber rifle for protection, and called 911.

He fired at Hofman when Hofman attempted to pursue him, striking him through a glass door and causing facial injuries.

Arrest and Charges

Hofman was taken into custody by deputies while reportedly very intoxicated. He is charged with first-degree intentional homicide. Court records show he entered a not guilty plea and is scheduled to return to Shawano County Circuit Court on July 8.

Background

According to the criminal complaint, the three men had known each other for over a decade through hunting and had no prior conflicts. Victim #2 described Hofman as “a bit weird” and “a hermit sort of dude,” but noted that nothing that evening should have provoked violence.
