Authorities in Kansas say a man shot and killed his estranged wife amid a history of domestic abuse.

Victim and Incident

Joshua Orlando, 29, is charged with first-degree intentional and premeditated murder in the death of 25-year-old Ivy Unruh. The shooting occurred at the Remington Apartments on East 37th Street North in Wichita on the morning of April 17.

Officers found Unruh near “Building 5” suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body. A handgun was recovered nearby. She was rushed to the hospital and died a few days later.

911 Call and Statements

Authorities say Orlando himself made the 911 call. In it, he described an argument with Unruh, during which he admitted to shooting her. Orlando allegedly said, “I shot her, I shot her,” and later expressed remorse, stating, “I know she didn’t mean to hurt me.”

Crime Scene Details

Police reported Unruh lying on her back on a stairway step, with blood coming from her nose. She had a black backpack on her right shoulder, a plastic bag containing a Nintendo Switch in her right hand, and a purse on her left arm. Orlando’s 9 mm Sig Sauer P365 was found nearby.

Background

Unruh had filed for divorce in August 2025, citing verbal and physical abuse. Her leasing agent and supervisor confirmed past incidents of abuse. Orlando alleged Unruh had cheated on him and said the argument on the day of the shooting escalated over a Nintendo Switch exchange.

Shooting Circumstances

Orlando told investigators that during the argument, Unruh struck him with the bag containing the Switch. He claimed he “blind fired” a single round from his handgun, saying he did not aim at her. Surveillance footage showed Unruh leaving her apartment at 8:00:15 a.m., with the gunshot occurring 52 seconds past 8:00 a.m., and the 911 call at 8:01:21 a.m.
