A pedestrian was killed in a crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 20 in Richland County, South Carolina. William Gunter, 42, was arrested and charged with felony leaving the scene of a collision involving death, felony DUI, leaving the scene of a collision involving property damage, and simple possession of marijuana, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).
Details of the Crash
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near the 75-mile marker on the eastbound side of I-20. Troopers say the pedestrian was putting fuel into a disabled 2002 Lexus sedan on the shoulder of the highway when a 2021 Ford van traveling eastbound ran off the road and struck both the pedestrian and the Lexus. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger in the Lexus was uninjured.
Driver’s Actions After the Crash
After hitting the pedestrian and the Lexus, Gunter allegedly left the scene. He was later involved in another collision. Gunter, who was alone in the van, was taken by EMS to a local hospital.
Investigation
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
